Steps involved:

Step 1: Start Donor Screening process
Click HERE for donor registration form

  • A transplant team representative will contact you within 3 days to review your medical history. From here, a representative will inform you if there are specific specialists, tests, documents, etc. they will need to proceed further.

Step 2: Obtain Basic Information.

  • Up to date physical and dental exam
  • Women need up to date pap smears and possibly mammograms
  • If you are 45 or older, you need a colonoscopy
  • Keep in mind that ALL basic information can be done now to cut the waiting time down.

** It’s important for potential donors to actively follow up with the transplant center throughout the screening process — the centers will not reach out or provide reminders due to donor protection policies. Donors should call regularly (about once a week) to check their status and help move the process forward.**

Further into the process, the following will be done:

  • 24 hour urine sample
  • Blood drawn
  • Cheek swabbed
  • Testing done (Xray, Echo, CT Scan of abdomen)
  • Cardiologist clearance (might vary per donor if you need a stress test completed or not)
  • Meet the transplant team who will be working with you. The donor team includes: transplant coordinator, surgeon, social worker, dietician, and pharmacist. (This meeting will take place all in one location with the previous tests mentioned.)

FINAL STEP: Transplant team member will contact you if you are a match for Brian OR if you are a good candidate to donate for Brian (which allows him to participate in a larger pool of living donor matches).

Cleared to be a Donor Steps:

  • Both donor and recipient have to STAY healthy (no colds, i.e. even a basic runny nose, no fevers, does not test positive for Covid, etc.)
  • A team member will set up a transplant date
  • At this stage, it is crucial to do everything you can to avoid any illnesses.

PLEASE CONSIDER/APPROVE:

Paired Exchange Program (if your kidney is not an ideal match for Brian, your kidney can still be used to GUARANTEE Brian a LIVING donor kidney from another donor as soon as one is available.)
